DigiLocker is a secure cloud-based IT solution provided by the Government of India. It is an easy way to digitally upload, store, and quickly access critical official documents. These documents can include Aadhar, PAN, Passport, driving license, educational certificates, etc. It was started in July 2015 as part of the Digital India campaign.
Advantages of DigiLocker
The biggest advantage of this service is that it eliminates the need to carry physical copies of important documents like Aadhar Card, Driving Licence, etc. You can access DigiLocker through the website or the official mobile apps available on the Android and iOS stores. It ensures security through authentication and data encryption.
The GOI launched DigiLocker to digitise necessary paperwork and bring down the use of physical documents. Most government departments are integrated with this service. Issuers of official documents can directly upload digital copies of documents to a citizen's DigiLocker account.
Verified and authentic documents
DigiLocker is closely integrated with the Aadhaar database. You have the option to link your Aadhaar card with your DigiLocker account. Accessing Aadhaar-linked documents such as the PAN card and driving license becomes easier when you do so. Aadhaar-linked documents in your DigiLocker account are digitally signed, considered verified and authentic, and most government departments accept them. If you are looking for a government service that needs you to verify your Aadhaar details, you can do so directly from your DigiLocker account.
e-Sign feature
Another important feature on offer is the e-Sign feature. If your Aadhaar is integrated with DigiLocker, you can digitally sign documents using your credentials, eliminating any doubts about the validity of the digital signature.
