Leading the celebrations of India’s 164th Income Tax Day on 24 July 2023, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reminded citizens of the importance of tax payments in nation-building. The day also aims to encourage more people to contribute to the country’s development by paying taxes. The celebration took place at the Plenary Hall, Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, and was attended by all the field offices of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) across India.
Govt to simplify tax compliance
Sitharaman mentioned that the government has sent one lakh notices to people who haven’t filed their tax returns properly or have declared less income. All these cases are related to old tax returns filed 4 to 6 years ago, and the income is found to be almost ₹50 lakhs, which is expected to be cleared by 2024. This means the government is ensuring people pay their taxes correctly and per the rules.
During the celebrations, the FM discussed the government’s efforts to simplify tax compliance for taxpayers, making it easier for everyone to pay taxes. The Income Tax Department launched a new mobile app called ‘Aayakar Setu,’ designed to make things easier for taxpayers by providing improved services and solving any problems or concerns they may have. It offers better support and convenience to taxpayers.
